You are stronger than you think – My wife’s guest post.
It was the warm evening of the 3rd of October 2016 when my husband Leszek completed his first Ironman in Barcelona and inspired me to follow in his footsteps at the same time.
I had to learn swimming, fight the fear of open water, start cycling and do much more running. On the first triathlon (sprint distance 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) I struggled a lot and I cried once I finished it. Those were tears of emotions and being proud of myself that I did it. At this stage, I didn’t tell anyone I want to do an Ironman and I questioned myself if I will manage as I struggled with much more shorter distance.
One year forward, during the Ironman 70.3 Edinburgh, I was telling myself
YOU ARE STRONGER THAN YOU THINK and THE PAIN IS ONLY TEMPORARY.
This two sentences helped me to finish. At this stage, I already swam 1.9k and cycled 90k. The run is my strongest discipline out of those three but it was the toughest.
Now I feel grateful my body allowed me to do it, that I had the energy, the power and a strong mind until the end. That my guts didn’t give up. That I didn’t have a cramp. That I didn’t catch flat tyre or crashed on the bike and that the sea was so calm and there was no jellyfish.
This adventure is not over yet. I know that the next three months will be even harder as I will be training for the full Ironman distance in Italy (double what I did last Sunday).
Again, I am looking forward to learning more about myself, my body, nutrition and my mind.
I can’t wait to see how far I can push myself and what my body is capable off and to do something I couldn’t even imagine doing before.
I also hope this will inspire some of you guys to do something extraordinary which you always dreamed off! It’s all about small steps and one massive uncomfortable one once per a while.
